An extra host | Everyday Miracles

Fr. Clint Ressler

Wednesday, July 14, 2021

One day, I went with one of our seminarians to take Holy Communion to a homebound parishioner. When the seminarian went to the tabernacle to get a host, without mentioning it to me, he decided to take not just one host but two.
Having made our visit, we were returning to the parish when I suddenly thought about one of our older parishioners, who is also homebound and who I had been meaning to visit. I mentioned this to the seminarian, and that's when he revealed to me that he had taken an extra host. But then I thought, “I don’t know her address, we’ll just have to return to the parish.” Suddenly, I realized I happened to have a copy of the parish directory on me, so we changed course and went there.
When we made our unexpected visit, the parishioner and her family were very surprised and happy to see us. But she was even happier to learn that we had that extra host with us. It was a long time since she had received Holy Communion.
The biggest surprise, though, was that it was her birthday! She felt that God had come to visit her for her birthday.
After all was said and done, I remember feeling sort of a tingle as the awareness dawned on me that God had foreseen this. I had one of those smiles that comes from inside your heart. I love how God does these things and just sort of winks at us.

Recall the parable of the talents (Matt 25:14-30).  A man is preparing for a journey and entrusts his possessions to his servants.  To one he gives five talents; to another he gives two talents; and to another he gives one talent.  The first two servants are proactive and trade with the talents; each doubling what […]

Archbishop Collins continues his reflections on the parables of Jesus in Lectio Divina with Archbishop Thomas Collins.  In April, Toronto’s chief shepherd meditates on two parables: the rich fool and the faithful and wise steward found in Luke (Luke 12:13-21, 35-48). The story of the rich fool details the account of the young man who […]
