On March 13, 2013, Pope Francis spoke to the people of Rome as their new bishop and asked for their prayers before offering his very first apostolic blessing.

The world was soon to discover the wind of change blowing through that Vatican that day. From his encounter with the migrants of Lampedusa, to the countless Apostolic Visits throughout the world, to his landmark Synod on Synodality, this first pope from the New World consistently sounded the drumbeat of pastoral renewal, structural conversion, and prophetic solidarity.

Invoking the example of St. Francis of Assisi in his papal name and in the titles of two social encyclicals, the Holy Father repeatedly called us to share the joy of the Gospel, to reach out to the poor and the marginalized, to extend the hand of peace and fraternity, and to praise God as stewards of his Creation.

While we mourn his passing and pray for the repose of his soul, we also recall the joy and inspiring hope we found by following Pope Francis throughout his pontificate.
