Pray with Pope Francis Reflection - October 2024

Fr. Edmund Lo, SJ

Tuesday, October 8, 2024

My brothers and sisters: In this month of October, our Holy Father invites us to pray for a shared mission, that the Church continue to sustain in all ways a synodal lifestyle, as a sign of co-responsibility, promoting the participation, the communion and the mission shared among priests, religious and lay people.
How do we understand this month’s prayer intention, for a shared mission in the Church in the spirit of synodality? We can begin with this: As the Church, we have a shared mission, which is to share the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ, that is, to evangelise, our neighbours, and ultimately the world.
This is not a task that is exclusively reserved for some but not others. We often fall into the temptation of thinking that evangelisation is the task of those who seem to be holier or more capable than I; or we may think that my way of evangelisation is the best way, and all other methods are unworthy of consideration.
As Saint Paul the apostle writes in his first letter to the Corinthians, we are the different parts that make up the same body that is the Church. The spirit of synodality is not about ensuring that we shout the loudest so as to get what we want; rather, it is to think and feel with the Church because we are one body in Christ, and we have been given the mission to evangelise the world, a mission of which all of us play an integral part, albeit in different ways.
My brothers and sisters: Let us remember this shared mission to evangelise, and let us actively play our part and work with each other, so that the life-giving power of the Gospel be known and experienced throughout the world. May God bless you today.
