Mission to Mission

As the deer thirsts for streams of water, so my soul longs for you, O God. - Psalm 42

This opening line from Psalm 42 came to mind last week as I returned from a look-out on the grounds of Westminster Abbey, in Mission B.C. I had just spent ten or fifteen minutes looking out over Mission, pondering the events of the past three days and was on my way back to the guest house where I was staying. I looked up, and a deer was trotting across this knoll. "A nice way to end my trip," I thought smiling to myself.
The purpose of my trip was location scouting. A Salt + Light crew will be traveling to the Abbey to capture images of Holy Week -- a behind the scenes, making of Holy Week you could say.
During the visit I spoke to members of the Benedictine community; asking about their Triduum liturgies, inquiring about different customs, picking their brain on the importance of liturgy to the community, and taking many photos and footage of different locations we will be filming at. There's no shortage of interesting sights and sounds -- from the magnificent liturgies to the duties in the sacristy, to the tasks in the kitchen and the work by the gardeners, every department comes together to create a triumphant and glorious celebration for this, the peak of our liturgical year.
Like the deer thirsting for water, there is a thirsting for God at the Abbey. Not only a thirsting, but a satisfaction as well. Even after only a few days, I can see how their praying of the psalms, celebration of Mass, the work that they do, it all comes together -- each feeding the other, each an act of worship, each a longing for God, and each a satisfaction of this longing. I am hopeful that what we film will capture this. Viewers will have to wait to see the results, but we'll keep you up to date on our website!
