Faith in a Time of Crisis: Lebanon in Crisis

Salt + Light Media

Thursday, August 20, 2020

On August 4th, 2020, a massive chemical explosion ripped through Beirut’s port area and downtown, killing at least 200 people and injuring 5000. The blast, equivalent to a 3.3 magnitude earthquake, was felt as far away as the island of Cyprus and caused extensive damage – as far as 9 kilometres away from the blast – throughout the capital city of Lebanon, leaving some 300,000 people homeless.
This catastrophe came in the midst of another crisis caused by COVID-19, which itself happened in the middle of one of the country’s worst financial crises.
In this edition of Faith in a Time of Crisis, Deacon Pedro Guevara-Mann speaks with Carl Hétu, National Director for Catholic Near East Welfare Association – Canada, about the situation in Lebanon and the work of CNEWA in the region.
