A letter to my Companion – Pope Francis

Rodney Leung

Friday, March 10, 2017

Dearest Papa,
Happy 4th Anniversary of saying “Yes!” to your papacy!
Over the past four years, you refilled energy to the Church and keep bringing the hope to the world, especially to the people in far end.
Thank you for helping us meditate of the message of God from daily mass at the Casa Santa Marta. When I read your homilies on Vatican radio, it is like a lesson that teaches me to understand how to practice the Catholic faith.
Thank you for your pastoral visit to 17 countries in past 4 years which included Brazil, Israel, Jordan, Palestine, South Korea, Albania, France ,Turkey, Sri Lanka, Philippines , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Cuba, United States, Kenya, Uganda, Central African Republic, Mexico, Greece, Armenia, Poland, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Sweden. You taught us how to be a channel of peace in action, such as visiting the poor, refugees, elderly, the sick and prisoners, etc. Also, as a Chinese, I feel very thankful about you really passed through the sky and gave a blessing to the people in China when you returned back to Vatican from the Asian Youth Day in Korea. When I talked about it in on our media platform, there were lots of comments of thanks to you and praise to the Lord with you at the same time. They are all praying for you.
Thank you for walking with the youth, especially during World Youth Day in Brazil and Poland. Your participation and your messages offer so much encouragement for us against the fight of materialism, and encourage us to have courage to swim against the tide.
Thank you for giving us a merciful gift – the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. You remind us to be merciful like father. Also, we find out the answer of “what is mercy” together with Church throughout your general audience. One of the most meaningful parts is when you gave us the opportunity to walk through the Holy Door and the door of mercy during a Jubilee Year and allowing us to recieve a Jubilee Indulgence.
Thank you for canonizing all the saints, such as St. John Paul II, St. John XXIII, the Parents of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, St.Teresa of Calcutta, etc. They are our role models. You are asking us to learn from their stories and let them to lead us to be a good catholics, to be a saint.
Thanks for your Encyclical Letter Laudato Si', for reminding us that everyone has a responsibility to protect the earth, to educate ourselves to love our planet, that it is not simple for the present living, but also for the next generation.
Last but not least, thank you for having two synods with the topic of “Family” in 2014 and 2015, to awaken the world on the meaning of “family” again. You also brought us your Apostolic Exhortation on The Joy of Love, Amoris Laetitia, which gave us guidelines on how to live out the marriage life and  support for the religious to work on the pastoral services of marriage and family.
Papa, I still remember our conversation during the synod 2014 in the Paul the VI Hall. I said I would pray for you, and you asked me to repeat my words, and I said to you again “I pray for you!”, then you responded to me with a big smile, “I need it!”
It is still fresh in my mind. I think the best gift for celebrating your 4th Anniversary papacy is to “pray for you.”
I would like to sing this prayer out for you and I wish you good health to keep being our companion in faith.
“Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me bring your love.
Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord,
And where there's doubt, true faith in you.
Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there's despair in life, let me bring hope.
Where there is darkness only light,
And where there's sadness ever joy.
Oh Master, grant that I may never seek
So much to be consoled as to console.
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love with all my soul.
Make me a channel of your peace.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
In giving of ourselves that we receive,
And in dying that we're born to eternal life.”
Mary Help of Christians, pray for us!
St.Peter, pray for us!
St.Francis of Assisi, pray for us!
Little brother in Christ,
Rodney Leung
