Why was Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost chosen as Pope? I have said at other occasions, the general congregations (pre-Conclave meetings of Cardinals) were helpful for us to have a better grasp of what the Church and the world might need for our next pope. Thanks to Pope Francis, he had reconnected our Church with the world. That the pope of the Catholic Church matters not only to Catholics but also non-Catholics.
There were Cardinals who saw that it was important for the new pope to continue with the successful pastoral approach of Francis. There were those who wanted to see the continuation and completion of reform of the Roman Curia started by Francis. Yet, others would like to see the new pope a pastor with deep spirituality and sound theology in his leadership for the universal Church. Very few candidates could come close to these criteria. Cardinal Prevost was probably the candidate who could satisfy more or less these criteria, as seen by at least two-thirds of the Cardinals who voted for him.
On a related point, not many Catholics know what “PP” means, found at the end of the popes’ signatures. It stands for “pastor pastorum,” meaning “Shepherd of Shepherds.” Therefore, the primary mission of popes is to be the Chief Pastor of the Church in the world, not a bureaucrat or politician. Pastor should usher his sheep under or closer to his leadership, tend the wounds of his sheep so that they can start their healing and be at peace.
We are also informed that the motto used for Pope Leo XIV’s Coat of Arms is “In illo uno unum,” meaning “In the One, we are one.” It was used by St. Augustine saying, “although we Christians are many, in the one Christ, we are one.” Therefore, Christ must be our Head, neither mass media nor socio-political, financial or the occult knowledge should be our ultimate guide. Our Holy Father the Pope, who, for us Catholics, is the Vicar of Christ in this world. He is the one under whom we are united in spirit.
Lastly, as we know, Pope Leo XIV is a great listener and he values collegiality. Hence, we pray for him so that he can journey with his cardinals and bishops in collegiality. And just as importantly, for him to accompany the People of God and for them to accompany him so that together we can develop our synodal Church, which is most desirable for now and the future.
