The Realities of Abortion

Deacon Pedro

Tuesday, January 23, 2007

I hope that you were able to watch CATHOLIC FOCUS last Jan 18 and 21st and saw the "ADVERTISING LIFE" episode. I am still a bit shocked at the double standard that exists with media attitudes towards pro-life organisations. One thing is to say that media organisations are generally pro-choice. It's a completely different thing to say that they are very much pro-abortion. And it's good to know that most people, though they may think that abortion kills a baby, it is also up to a woman to choose.
It's not good that they have this attitude, but it's good for us to know this, so that we can move to educate them better on the realities of abortion. If you believe that abortion kills a baby, then why would it be ok for anyone to do it? Who cares if it's their choice or not.
I've had women tell me that they wouldn't do it, but it's a woman's right to choose. I then ask, why wouldn't you do it? They say, "because it's a human being". Then, of course the question follows, "and if a woman doesn't want her unborn child, that makes the child a non-human being?"  Go figure.  I'm sure I'll write more about this.
But since we're on the topic of pro-life advertising, let me tell you: I was listening to a FOCUS ON THE FAMILY radio broadcast on the weekend and this is the radio ad they played:
Music begins. Young man's voice: "When I was a kid, I always dreamed of being a dad. Then my girlfriend got pregnant and she had an abortion. My dream did come true, I became a dad. But when my child needed me the most, I was not there to protect him."
Made me think of what my dear friend Joanne Matters once told me: "Abortion doesn't not make you a mother. It makes you the mother of a dead baby."
Send us your comments.
Take care and talk to you soon.
