"Obedience is a short cut to perfection. […] Nothing gives greater security to our actions, or more effectually cuts the snares the devil lays for us, than to follow another person's will, rather than our own, in doing good."- St. Philip NeriIn celebrating the feast of St. Joseph this week, we remember a man who so lovingly and obediently followed wherever the Lord asked him to go. While Mary’s Magnificat is often recited, St. Joseph’s silent fiat can easily be overlooked. For me, this season of repentance has also been one full of discernment. In trying to search for God’s will, I have begun to feel Him pull me in certain ways. I am learning that there is a sense of peace that comes with submitting oneself to the will of the Father. It is Joseph’s surrender that got him to sainthood, a powerful witness for us as we strive for the same. Lent is the perfect time for us to reflect on the importance of obedience as we enter into this remembrance of Christ’s passion. St. Paul reminds us in his letter to the Philippians that Christ “humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death — even death on a cross.”
