My brothers and sisters: For this month of November, our Holy Father asks us to pray for the prevention of suicide, that those who are struggling with suicidal thoughts might find the support, care and love they need in their community, and be open to the beauty of life. There can be many reasons behind having suicidal thoughts. Be that as it may, we should not expect those who want to end their lives to simply conjure up enough inner strength to ask for help, as this may well be the last thing on their minds, when they are so consumed and paralysed by the struggles of life. For our part, let us not concern ourselves with trying to solve a problem; rather, let us strive to be a supportive presence, so that they do not feel as if they are on their own in facing the hardships of life. We do not pray that God does everything and we remain unchanged; we are the ones through whom the Lord works. This month’s prayer intention mentions being open to the beauty of life. The beauty of life does not necessarily mean that everything is fine; beauty can shine through the patient and steady presence of someone who is willing to be there for a friend during the darkest times. We can participate in that beauty.Let us pray then, my brothers and sisters, that we be more open to be God’s instruments, especially for those whose sufferings and hardships feel unbearable. May the love of God work through us, and may we encounter the suffering Christ in them. May God bless you today.
