How should the Church be involved in nation-building? On July 9th, South Sudan will celebrate its Independence day. Many things hang in the balance for this country. Most of the tension hedging on who gets access to the rich mineral deposits that lie on the border between North and South Sudan. As we wait to see if violence will erupt again, we consider how we are called to be involved in nation-building in South Sudan. At first glance, the situation seems overwhelming, and exceedingly complicated. How can we help? What is the Church's gift to the people of South Sudan? Human forms of justice are not God's. God creates the conditions for justice to flourish, and in light of the upcoming solemnity of Pentecost, how do we roll up our sleeves to help create a culture of peace? How do Christians address corruption for example? Join Pedro Guevarra-Mann on the weekly edition of Perspectives as he speaks with Fr. Valerian Shirima SJ and Fr. Fratern Masawe SJ, who are no strangers to this type of work. The two, originally from Tanzania, speak about the Jesuit charism as it relates to forming others to serve and glorify God (and by extension each other). Father Masawe and Father Shirima, both former Provincials of the Eastern Africa Jesuit Province and former Presidents of the Jesuit Superiors of Africa and Madagascar, also share their thoughts on the Jesuits work: in universities, parishes, seminaries, refugee camps - wherever they are called - in South Sudan. It’s a great opportunity to be inspired and affirmed as they remind us of our responsibilities to love and serve our Lord Jesus, with the help of the Holy Spirit.
