New Cardinals - Live!

Kris Dmytrenko

Friday, November 23, 2007

Vestments at Gammarelli's, via Santa ChiaraThe College of Cardinals will increase by 23 this Saturday, breaking the 200 mark for the first time. In an atmosphere compared to the Superbowl by at least one commentator, Rome will be abuzz with the new appointments.
Kenya, Brazil, Mexico, Senegal, Italy, Spain, France, Ireland, India and the U.S.A. are among the nations celebrating new Cardinals. Among the notable elevations is His Beatitude Emmanuel III Delly, who, as the Patriarch of Babylon for the Chaldeans, represents embattled Christians in Iraq.  Polish Bishop Ignacy Jez is being raised to the dignity of Cardinal posthumously, having died one day before Pope Benedict XVI’s consistory announcement.
For serious Vatican events fans, S+L will broadcast the “Ordinary Public Consistory for the Creation of New Cardinals”—where the Cardinals receive the scarlett biretta, a.k.a. the “red hat”—live at 4 AM. The first Mass, including the presentation of the cardinalitial rings, airs on Sunday morning at the same time. For my part, I'll be tuning into the afternoon rebroadcasts, for which the times are listed below (all Eastern Standard Time):
Saturday, November 24:
4:00 AM – Ordinary Public Consistory (Live - English)
12:30 PM – Ordinary Public Consistory (English rebroadcast)
3:30 PM – Consistoire ordinaire public (French rebroadcast)
Sunday, November 25:
4:00 AM – Holy Mass with new Cardinals (live – English)
1:00 PM – Holy Mass with new Cardinals (English rebroadcast)
Monday, November 26:
8:00 PM – Messe avec les nouveaux cardineaux (French rebroadcast)
