The Lenten season is upon us, and in this time of year it can be tempting to hear and see the word “NO!” everywhere we go. After all, this liturgical season calls us to align our sufferings with Christ, from His 40 days in the desert all the way to His passion, suffering, and death on the cross. “No” seems fitting for the occasion, given that the word often alludes to a sense of suffering.
No to sugar and sweets. No to hitting the snooze button. No to eating while watching TV. No to mindless scrolling on our phones. No.
But if we take a few steps back and truly see the bigger picture, we begin to appreciate what the Lord asks of us during Lent: to say “Yes” to Him in everything we do.
Yes to spending more time in prayer with the Lord. Yes to donating previously loved clothing and household items to thrift stores and local charities. Yes to dying to myself and changing for the better, not just for Lent, but from here on out.
This shift in mindset is simple but powerful! So often as adults we can get jaded and bogged down by the “Nos” of our faith that we forget to see the bigger “YES!” behind the things we do for the Lord. We need to renew that childlike motivation to say “Yes!” to Him so that any time we do something new, uncomfortable, or even painful, we joyfully align that experience to Christ. Like a kid who gets back up to play after being bruised and Band-Aided, we should see life not for the many “Nos” it brings, but for the many ways we can say “Yes!” to God.
A big “YES!” we’re saying here at Salt + Light Media is starting our very first Children’s Liturgy of the Word for Lent, a series fittingly called Yes, Lord! It has been an absolute joy to work alongside Deacon Pedro Guevara-Mann on this passion project of his. We hope that watching these episodes will enrich your Lenten season and awaken the inner child in you!
