Dominican Sisters Sit Down with Oprah

Alessia Domanico

Monday, February 8, 2010

As mentioned by Mary Rose Bacani on tonight’s edition of Perspectives, the sacred sisterhood, (a topic that does not surface much nowadays on the mainstream media circuit) will be profiled on national television. Tomorrow, (Tuesday, February 9th  at 4 pm Eastern Time) the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist will be one of the highlight sistersoprahstories for Oprah Winfrey’s daily one hour show. Oprah correspondent, Lisa Ling documents her time spent at the sisters’ convent in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Several of the Dominican Sisters will also sit down live in the Oprah studio for a chat with the queen of talk shows herself, answering questions about their vocation as brides of Christ.
The community was started in 1997 as an answer to Pope John Paul II’s call for the “New Evangelization” and tomorrow's show happens to air on their 13th anniversary. The sisters recognized that these dates were completely unplanned and coincidental and have thanked the Lord for his timely intervention.
This show promises to be both groundbreaking and informative on the beliefs, lifestyle and practices of an American convent. Oprah’s daily show is seen by a vast amount of viewers from diverse backgrounds. It's a wonderful opportunity for the Church to get its message across to a mainstream audience, while putting the spotlight on an exemplary Catholic community like the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist. The production of this segment attests to the goals of World Social Communications Day, as well. It is a momentous occasion and step for the Catholic Church in its mission to become readily accessible through new technological channels.
The subject of the piece airing tomorrow is very near and dear to Salt + Light, as not long ago we produced a documentary on the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia entitled Beloved. This beautiful look into the lives of the sisters that also belong to the Dominican order gives a much more in depth perspective to the segment that will air on Oprah. If you find Oprah’s show interesting tomorrow and would like to see and learn more about the Dominican order, you can order your very own Beloved DVD from our website HERE.
