Welcome to Advent, and to our series, "Christmas Voices of Hope: Stories and Reflections for the Season." This time of preparation to celebrate the birth of Christ is full of stories, experiences, and traditions that come to define what the season means for each of us.
To inspire you with hope during this month of waiting and anticipation, we have invited friends and members of the Salt + Light Media family to share how their Advent and Christmas traditions have marked their own journey, and that of their communities.
Today's reflection was written by Aline Haddad, our bilingual marketing specialist.
Do you have a particular family or cultural tradition that you observe during Advent or Christmas?
Every year, on
St. Barbara's Day (today! December 4!)
, we officially begin the Advent season in our family. On this date, my immediate family gets together to eat and decorate the Christmas tree. We also plant wheat in three small plates, which in a few days will sprout into little wheat shoots. We let them grow throughout December, and place them in front of the nativity scene on Christmas Day.
Everyone pitches in to help with the Christmas decorations, and that's what makes this tradition so alive and precious. We then set up the nativity scene, an important step that refocuses us on the deeper meaning of this season.
Today, I continue to pass these traditions on to my daughter. Through these simple but symbolic gestures, I hope to share with her the beauty of anticipation, preparation, and the joy that accompanies Christmas.
On Christmas Eve, our extended family almost always gets together: we exchange gifts, enjoy a traditional meal, laugh, talk, and celebrate. And of course, we go to Midnight Mass together. Even in the midst of the festivities, we don't forget what's most important: prayer, contemplation, and welcoming Jesus into our lives.
Sometimes fatigue or circumstances prevent us from attending Midnight Mass, but in that case, we simply attend the celebration the next day. For us, the important thing is to honor this moment wholeheartedly, as a family, in peace and gratitude.
How do you integrate your Catholic values and worldview into your work, daily life, and relationships?
My Catholic values are not only related to moments of prayer or liturgical celebrations: they shape the way I live each day. First, there is an inner rhythm that accompanies me. I begin every day with a period of silence that allows me to reflect on many things in life. And, of course, prayer is essential every morning when I start my day, allowing me to face the day with joy and extraordinary peace. Similarly, every evening, I take time to pray with my daughter before going to sleep. These simple moments remind us of what is essential: to live in peace, trust, and gratitude.
In my professional life, in my community, and in society, three values guide me in a very concrete way: respect, patience, and forgiveness. These values, far from being abstract, are embodied in my choices, my words, and my way of being with others.
If you could send a Christmas message to our Salt + Light Media community and our viewers, what would it be?
In this beautiful Christmas season, I would like to send a message of peace, light, and joy to all Salt + Light Media viewers, as well as to all those who support this foundation and accompany us with their loyalty and prayers.
May this holiday be a time of renewed hope, gratitude, and sharing for you. May the birth of Christ illuminate your hearts and homes and guide you toward a new year filled with inner peace and gentleness.
I would also like to offer a special thought and prayer to all those who are spending Christmas alone this year. May the Lord surround you with His comforting presence, may He look upon you with tenderness, and may He grant you the strength and consolation you need. Know that you are not forgotten: we are thinking of you, we are keeping you in our prayers, and you are an integral part of this great spiritual family.
May the light of Christmas be with you today and every day.
