Welcome to Advent, and to our series, "Christmas Voices of Hope: Stories and Reflections for the Season." This time of preparation to celebrate the birth of Christ is full of stories, experiences, and traditions that come to define what the season means for each of us.
To inspire you with hope during this month of waiting and anticipation, we have invited friends and members of the Salt + Light Media family to share how their Advent and Christmas traditions have marked their own journey, and that of their communities.
Today's Q & A comes from Gianpaolo Capozzi, one of our Junior Video Editors and Associate Producers.
What is your role at Salt + Light Media? How do you bring your Catholic values and worldview to your work?
I am a Junior Video Editor at Salt + Light Media, and I occasionally work on stories for Behold as an Associate Producer.
In terms of bringing my Catholic values, I mainly focus on following our Catholic virtues like compassion, faith, and love, with the hope that this will seep into my work. More than that though, I remind myself a lot of just how sacred and important the mission is here, unlike secular media I may work on.
How has working for Salt + Light Media inspired you to celebrate the birth of Jesus?
Working here has allowed me to deeply understand the nuances and the inner workings of the Church, which in turn helps me understand Christ and his teachings.
If you could send one Christmas message to our Salt + Light Media community and viewers, what would it be?
An overwhelming thank you for your support. Our work is not possible without you. My wish for you is to spread the faith, in particular with the younger generation. Ask them what they want out of their faith, and we would love to deliver.
What is your favourite memory of Christmas growing up?
My favourite memory is the Christmas Eve Masses I went to and still go to. There is something so special about it. At my parish, we start the night by putting together a play about the birth of Jesus, and from there we continue with the Mass. At the end, when "Joy to the World" is sung, it is such a surreal moment, that something amazing has just happened.
Does your family or culture have a special Advent or Christmas tradition?
It is always traditional for Italians to eat tons of fish on Christmas. Almost every Christmas Eve after Mass is spent at my nonna's house with my family, eating and spending time with each other on a very special night.
What does Christmas mean to you personally, today?
To me, it is a joyful celebration, a reminder of victory over evil with Christ.
If you could describe Christmas in one word or image, what would it be — and why?
An image that can describe Christmas for me would be a crib with an infant Jesus, shining so bright it blinds the evil of the world, making it tremble.
